Again, my friend Mary Curtin hooked me up. She recommended me to the folks over at Jazz Boston in preparation for Jazz Week ’09. And sure enough, it worked out. I was invited to be one of only a few photogs for the events all across the area. My contact, Bob Young, was kind enough to even let me pick my own shows, so that I did. Before I knew it I had literally 10 straight days of jazz shows scheduled! This was my first real stretch of back-to-back-to-back… photography shoots and I was really excited about it. I knew I’d get into a groove.

I shot the following shows:

Gregorio Uribe at Regattabar. Great show, talented band, but I have to say, if someone ever asked me to shoot a gig at Regattabar again I’d have to pass. The lighting is horrible – very harsh, not flattering for the musicians at all, and the camera can only do so much. Also, the wall at the back of the stage is a drab grayish blue, really a bad shade, especially with the lighting conditions. I mean, would it be so hard to paint the wall black like any respectable jazz venue, or at least hang some cloth back there? Anything is better than what they have. Sorry to go off like this, but it really makes things hard for everyone when the club can’t get such simple things right.

Manguito at Villa Victoria Arts Center, phenomenal show! Such fun!

Leo Genovese with Nat Mugavero and Justin Purtill at Beehive. Modern jazz, very abstract, very innovative. I loved this.

Cindy Blackman Explorations at Regattabar. Aside from the venue, this was an amazing show! Cindy Blackman is a true pioneer and I feel so honored to have been able to photograph her.

Arni Cheatham teaches children about the saxophone family at the Boston Public Library. This was just awesome. Arni did a great job, alongside Kevin Harris.

Students at New England Conservatory.

Urban Outreach Orchestra at Berklee Performance Center.

Either/Orchestra at Regattabar.

Donal Fox at Sculler’s Jazz Bar.

The Fringe with Leo Genovese at Beehive.
