De La Soul has been at it for 20 years. So that means that I started listening to them when I was about 13 or 14 years old, and thinking about it at the show the other night, it really put things into perspective. As a big hip hop fan, and dare I say purist, I consider De La Soul to be the crème de la crème of the hip hop world. They always seemed to stay above the noise, and maintained their status as true to hip hop – as a style of music, but also as a way of life. That is hip hop.
The trio that hails from Long Island known as De La Soul, that influenced an entire genre of music, and two generations of hip hop heads, played an energizing set at Showcase Live in Foxborough MA. As a house photographer I was able to get up close and personal, and rather than shoot them as an act I really wanted to focus on them as individuals, really taking the time to isolate them in my frame when they were at center stage, on the mic, deep in their role. I think I pulled it off.
The show was just a lot of fun. Yet again, another timeless act who not only recognizes how fortunate they are to have stood the test of time, but who also gives
back to the fans. The trio were so gracious to the crowd, so vocal in their gratitude, and were so in a humble way. At one point, while rallying the crowd with a little music trivia, they asked a young kid to join them on stage for a little De La Soul trivia. While he may have not known the answer the question, the crowd helped him out with laughs, applause, and smiles. The trio were kind enough to let him off easy, and although they picked on him for his name “Gavin” not being hip hop enough, they still let him hang out on stage for a few minutes and dance.
