Boston’s July 4th celebration is one of the best in the country, and draws people from all over the world. The world famous Boston Pops play two public concerts at Boston’s esplanade, along the Charles River. Most locals avoid the crowds and instead prefer to remain at home or perch themselves atop building around town to catch the fireworks.
This year my wife and I had some family over for a BBQ and planned to go one town over to Cambridge to catch the fireworks, on the other side of the Charles River. But something better came up – we got an invitation from a colleague and friend of mine, Michael LeBarron, to join him and some family and friends family on a boat on the Charles. So, that’s exactly what we did!
It was the ideal way to spend July 4th, with family and friends aboard a beautiful boat anchored on the river with front row seats to the fireworks show. And what a show it was!
I brought along my Canon 40D, my EF-S 70-200 f/2.8, an EF-S 24-70 f/2.8, and a variety of other lenses. I set up my tripod on the top deck, out of the way as much as possible, and started snapping pictures. I set the f-stop at 8.0, used manual focus, and adjusted the shutter speed at times ranging from half a second all the way as long as 30 seconds at times. The show was about 30 minutes of thunderous booms and cracks that even shook the boat. There was a slight westerly breeze which affected the longer exposures, but I think I did pretty well. The results are below. I hope you enjoy.

This is a beautiful shot. I don’t most people realize just how hard it is to “capture” fireworks. You did it amazingly.
