One of the biggest names in hip-hop (and I mean real hip-hop, not the candy hip-hop you get on the radio today) was at Showcase Live a couple weeks ago and yet again I had the chance to photograph it. Despite being about 90 minutes late, albeit fashionably, the crowd was tolerant because of the fantastic music from Bad Rabbits prior to Slick Rick taking the stage, but only after Slick Rick’s tour DJ, DJ Kaos, warmed up the crowd by taking it back to the old school, and I mean real old school. He guaged the crowd and it turned out the barely a little less than half the crowd was under 30 years old, making the lessons all the more important. DJ Kaos played the ones and twos like an old pro, and he made it look so easy – from Audio Two to Boogie Down Productions, over to LL Cool J and Grandmaster Flash. It was a great way to get the crowd energized for Slick Rick.
Once Slick Rick took the stage, everyone seemed to have the same reaction as I did, which was, “holy shit – that’s Slick Rick! That’s him!”
Without further delay, here are the pics. Oh, one last thing – turns out Bad Rabbits are actually Slick Ricks tour band! They were phenomenal! And it also turns out they’re out of Davis Square, here in Somerville, MA. Pretty cool. I hope to see and hear more of them – they’re something special.
